We are thrilled to announce a major investment in our future with two capital grants from Biffa Award and the Foyle Foundation. Their generous support funded the replacement of our auditorium and stage lighting infrastructure in need of urgent repair and modernisation.
Maintaining our Grade II listed building required significant effort and this essential funding provided a complete overhaul of our lighting "brain" and fixtures. The upgrades include:
LED Efficiency: We replaced 230 traditional bulbs with energy-efficient alternatives.
Modern Control: We installed new dimmers, rack equipment, and a Paradigm control system.
Heritage Restoration: We repaired our iconic chandelier and roof section.
Safety Upgrades: We replaced brass wall lamps and installed new emergency lighting tracks.
As the only mid-scale theatre in Newham, Stratford East is a vital cultural hub for our community. This upgrade moves us closer to Net Zero Carbon and will transform the experience of the over 70,000 audience members we welcome every year, ensuring they enjoy theatre in the best possible conditions. It will also strengthen our commitment to talent development through our YOUNG TECHS programme and enable us to present work of the highest artistic quality on a stage.
The project is also the first step towards a major capital campaign to restore and modernise key elements of our Victorian theatre. These essential works—including replacing the roof on our 140-year-old building, installing new energy-efficient heating, ventilation and cooling system and improving accessibility—are critical to securing the theatre’s long-term future.
With these investments, Stratford East will continue to thrive as a second home for our community for generations to come. We’re deeply grateful to the Foyle Foundation and Biffa Award for helping us protect our heritage and strengthen our role at the heart of East London’s cultural life.
