Get ready for a soul-stirring journey this spring. We just announced the incredible cast for Nancy Medina’s acclaimed production of CHOIR BOY, written by Academy Award-winner Tarell Alvin McCraney. This beautiful play arrives at Stratford East on THU 26 MAR and runs through SAT 25 APR.
This production previously swept the 2023 Black British Theatre Awards, winning Best Production and Best Director. We feel thrilled to welcome back the stars who made that run so special.
Terique Jarrett reprises his role as Pharus, after recently winning the Black British Theatre Award for Best Male Lead Actor in a Play for this performance. Michael Ahomka-Lindsay returns as David, Daon Broni takes on the role of Headmaster Marrow and Khalid Daley (last seen at Stratford East in THE BIG LIFE) joins as JR. Martin Turner plays Mr Pendleton, Rabi Kondé joins the cast as Bobby, as Freddie MacBruce rounds out the ensemble as AJ.
CHOIR BOY follows Pharus, a gifted soloist at the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys. When a peer sullies his pride, Pharus must navigate what it means to be a young, Black, queer man in a traditional environment.
The play sends the audience on an electrifying journey through the growing pains of humanity. The characters navigate spirituality, sexuality, race, and identity on their path to manhood. Soul-stirring a cappella gospel hymns and spirituals thread through the entire story, creating a joyous celebration of those who march to their own drum.
Playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney wrote the Oscar-winning film Moonlight and currently serves as the Artistic Director of the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. Director Nancy Medina, the Artistic Director of Bristol Old Vic, brings her vision back to this production after her recent BBTA win for Best Director.
The full creative team includes Tatenda Shamiso (Co-Director), Max Johns (Set & Costume Designer), Femi Temowo (Arranger & Musical Director), Donato Wharton (Composer & Sound Designer), Nao Nagai (Lighting Designer), Ingrid MacKinnon (Movement Director & Intimacy Coordinator).
Don’t miss your chance to see this powerhouse production.
