2016 MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

MTW gives writers of beats, words, and sounds a place to develop their projects and voices under the guidance of TRSE’s artistic team along with Fred Carl and Robert Lee, two specialist tutors from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.

Held every summer, MTW brings musicians, DJs, rappers, playwrights, spoken word artists, novelists, poets and hip hop artists from around Britain to Theatre Royal Stratford East to work closely with experienced theatre professionals.

For this submission, TRSE would love to hear from writers they have never met or encountered before. Up for grabs is a 2-week development period under the guidance of Fred, Robert and TRSE as well as a £500 seed commission fee for each collaborator. You’ll be joining our current line-up of artists who will be working on their own projects at the theatre. This is a great opportunity for us to meet you and for you to tap into a bigger creative network. We welcome those who have written a musical before and those who have always wanted to.

TRSE is dedicated to breaking new ground with musicals that bring contemporary and urban music into the mainstream of British theatre through diverse and unheard stories. We are also open to work that might use a traditional MT sound to explore new ideas or stories. We are interested in musicals that engage audiences with their story, form, or music from writers of all ages and backgrounds.

Interested writers and teams (with partially/fully completed piece OR a great idea) should submit:

Two sides of A4 talking about the project or idea. (We are happy to look at any scripts-in-progress or links to videos and audios.)

  • A sample of your work.
  • The answer to the following question: Why does this story need to be told today and by TRSE?

Submissions are now closed.
