Newham Unlocked 2021

Newham Unlocked is a festival of free events, performances and workshops. Curated and produced in partnership with Applecart Arts, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Rosetta Arts and, and is funded by Newham Council.

The theme of the festival is unity and there will be plenty for Newham residents of all ages to explore and enjoy. See below for the Stratford East events taking place as part of the festival, or click here for the full festival line-up.

Sat 02 Oct, 1pm-6pm, FREE
Gerry Raffles Square & Theatre Square 

Join us for an afternoon of FREE and fun activities at our Fun Palace. There’ll be face painting, arts and crafts, storytelling, participatory activities, live entertainment and much more... 

Visitors are welcome to simply arrive on the day and join in the fun. All the activities will take place directly outside the theatre in Gerry Raffles Square and Theatre Square. Booking is not required.  


Fun Palaces is an ongoing national and international campaign, nurturing and supporting the potential and positivity of sharing people’s enthusiasms, passions and skills with their own local community. Stratford Park

Come and show your love for your local Newham community and light up Stratford Park by taking part in a Lantern Parade. At 6pm, participants of all ages from across Newham will carry lanterns through Stratford Park in celebration of unity and life in the area. The parade will march along to music provided by Baja Beats UK, before finishing with performances from local artists.

Everyone is welcome to attend! Bring a lantern and join the parade, or come along to enjoy the colourful spectacle.

Lantern making workshops in Newham with local community groups will take place in the run-up to the event with community artist Anna Van Der Poorten. If you are a local group based in Newham that might want to take part, please contact Sarah,

Stratford East will be creating a short film showcasing the vibrancy and energy of Newham through the eyes of a young skater.

What does 'unity' mean to you? Is it time with your family? A meal with your mates? Submit your own video and help build our untiy wall. VIEW THE DIGITAL WALL HERE

EXPOSED REALITY - an audio-visual exhibition
Artists Paul Andrew and Jovana Backovic will be working with Forest Gate Youth Zone to co-create a project about identity and community in Newham. The project will be using music and story-telling to share the voices of young people from the youth zone.
