The Theatre Workshop theatre company, formed by Joan Littlewood in 1945, was a group of actors and artists set on involving artists and audiences in drama as a living event. Stratford East became their permanent home in 1953 where they developed landmark productions such as Fings Ain’t Wot They Used T’Be (1959) and Oh, What a Lovely War! (1963). Joan is commemorated today by the statue that sits in the square outside the theatre.
