Theatre Royal Stratford East is committed to every section of its local community, constantly developing relationships with community groups and voluntary sector organisations. The theatre also champions access for groups of disabled people and caters to their needs.
The theatre now has s more spacious foyer and a wheelchair-accessible box office. There are 6 wheelchair spaces in the theatre itself, lifts to the upper level, and wheelchair-accessible toilets. Guide dogs and hearing dogs are welcome in the auditorium: please inform Box Office when you book.
What is captioning? Captioning is similar to television subtitling and gives deaf, deafened, and hard of hearing people access to live performances. The actors’ words appear on a display unit at the same
time as they are spoken or sung.
What is audio description? Audio description in theatre is a live verbal commentary on the visual elements of a production as it unfolds.
We have sign language interpreted, audio described and captioned performances for all main shows (those on for more than one week). We usually combine these with our post-show discussion so you can take full part in these as well as enjoying the show.
If you would like to join our access mailing list please email your details to elnorton@stratfordeast.com and you will be the first to hear of newly scheduled performances and of any accessible events or tours we are hosting.
We have an infra-red assisted listening system in the auditorium.
Large print copies of all our printed material (leaflets, brochures, even programmes) are also available on request. If you need a large print copy of the theatre's brochures please call 020 8279 1120.
