The Theatre Royal building in Stratford –Atte-Bowe has had an extraordinary history - surviving major fire, Word War II bombing and 1970s town planning bulldozers – culminating in its present Grade II* Listed status. Built in 1884, renovated by Frank Matcham, and home to Joan Littlewood’s world-famous Theatre Workshop Company, the building has gone through many changes and given birth to hundreds of shows.
Murray Melvin (A Member of Joan Littlewood's Company and now our voluntary Archivist) has put together a book telling the story of this much-loved building in the heart of Stratford. The book is being launched to coincide with our 125th birthday and will be available to buy from our Box Office.
As a companion to this volume, Murray has also researched an exhaustive list of every stage performance in the building from Richelieu in 1884, through to Aladdin today.
As this is a massive list, we have made it available to browse online as a PDF document.
