 Benjamin Zephaniah

A letter by Benjamin Zephaniah

‘When I left Birmingham and headed south to seek my fame and fortune, I was also looking for a theatre that I could build a relationship with; a theatre that was keeping it real and reflecting what was happening in the world beyond its walls.

I spent my first few nights sleeping in a car in south London, but then I met a friend who said I should stay with him in a place called Stratford. I had no idea where it was but I just couldn’t believe my luck, I ended up staying next to the Theatre Royal Stratford East, the cultural palace I had dreamt of. This was a place where the work they did had real relevance to those who lived and worked around it. What I saw on stage there was work that was daring, challenging, exhilarating, and often thought-provoking, but it was always entertaining. I wanted to be a part of it.

Young people have always been at the heart of this venue, they are at home here, and they make a huge difference to the shows on stage. As an energetic young man, this theatre gave me the physical space and the practical support I needed to develop as a creative being. And still every day of the week, this place glows with warmth and chatter; a consistent buzz welcomes you when you when you walk in to the foyer or sit in the bar. It is still a true community centre.

The theatre has recently been refurbished, and is now ready to welcome more people through its doors than ever before. I hope you will join with me, and all the team who work here, in ensuring its vision can be supported into the 21st century and beyond.’
