The runner up was Jay Kumar Patel, also of Upton Cross Primary School.
The Art Olympics Competition for Newham primary schools (open to Years 3-6) was run collaboratively by New World Nigeria and Theatre Royal Stratford East to encourage local children to interact with and be inspired by Nigerian life and art. A large number of entries were received from across the Borough.
Kerry Michael, Artistic Director at Theatre Royal Stratford East said: ‘This competition has enabled us to celebrate the excitement of the Olympic, Paralympic Games and our period as Nigeria House with schools in Newham.’
School pupils were asked to design a poster celebrating Nigeria - Newham Together during the 2012 London Games. Some of the things the children were asked to think about when creating their work were; what makes Newham special to you, what do you love about living in Newham, what are you excited about during the games and what do you think represents Nigeria - Newham Together?
At the informal ceremony yesterday, Maisha Hussain was presented with her prizes by Ms Evelyn Oputu, Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer – Nigerian Bank of Industry, and Engineer Sani Ndasuna, President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee. She was also hosted by Dawn Reid, Deputy Artistic Director at Theatre Royal Stratford East and Chichi Nwokocha who is one of 3 young emerging Nigerian producers to be given a paid internship at Nigeria House as part of the artistic collaboration with the theatre.
Until Sunday 12 August, Theatre Royal Stratford East is delighted to be hosting New World Nigeria’s hospitality house, Nigeria House. Music, theatre, poetry, fashion exhibitions and films from Nollywood - Nigeria’s dynamic answer to Hollywood – are key aspects of the Nigeria House event. New World Nigeria’s programme is powered by Nigeria’s Bank of Industry (BOI) and the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) and is a drive to promote both cultural industries as well as create new business links internationally..
