Youth Arts and Education
Development of new artists is not just about giving a stage to undiscovered talent. It can also start by providing young people with the means and the environment in which they can discover their own talents for themselves.
Doing this requires more thought, energy and dedication than merely putting on a talent show. It’s about developing people; building their confidence, involving and engaging them, giving them the time, space and structure so they can express themselves creatively, initially amongst peers but ultimately in front of an audience.
This is where Theatre Royal’s Youth Arts team focuses its efforts. The rewards for the young people who take part can be immense.
State of the Nation are a company of young people, aged 17 – 24 years, committed to working closely with the community to make theatre that reflects their experiences. The State of the Nation crew takes responsibility for research, organise their own events and tour their work around east London. State of the Nation is for those young people that believe theatre has the power to transform lives.
Community Residencies: Our community has many stories to tell. Sharing those stories gives us all a chance to understand each other more. Working with our artists and workshop facilitators, youth groups create plays which focus on the things that matter to them.
We have worked with Youth Offending Teams, Teenage Parents, Young Carers, Refugees and unaccompanied young people. All have created unique plays that provide them with a voice.
Youth Theatre: For those aged 12 – 17 years that want to work together to make theatre. They meet every week to explore text, improvise and build characters and plays.
