TRSE AD Kerry Michael invited to Rio for Home Theatre

Theatre Royal Stratford East’s artistic director Kerry Michael has been invited to Brazil to take part in the 4th edition of the Home Theatre Festival (RIO). Taking place from 28th April to 8th May 2016, Kerry will work with 12 actors to oversee the creation of new work in homes across the Olympic City of Rio De Jeneiro.   He will be joined by the artistic director of the State Theatre in Petoria, South Africa’s National Theatre, Aubrey Sekhabi.

As well as working on developing these new pieces of work, Michael will support the training of three emerging directors from Rio and participate in a conference the organizers have entitled ‘Theatre as an Exchange of Cultures’.  The conference debate will be chaired by writer and director Marcus Faustini, the originator of the Home Theatre concept and Paul Heritage from the UK/Brazilian exchange initiative People’s Palace Project.

Having previously been involved with Home Theatre Brazil last year, Kerry Michael said: “It’s great to be in Rio on the eve of the 2016 Games working on a project that sees the city populated with one of most immediate and honest theatre initiatives I’ve even been part of.  This is all amplified because we are working with some of the most dynamic artists in some of the most complicated social environments.  I’m looking forward to coming back to the UK and sharing what I’ve learnt with the teams back home”.

Home Theatre Festival Brazil won the Shell Award (for Innovation) in 2013 and since its inception has taken 70 theatre scenes to hundreds of homes throughout the city. This latest edition will see them create and present theatre in more than 130 homes across this year’s Olympic city.

HOMETHEATRE has also been in produced in London by Theatre Royal Stratford East in 2013 and 2015.  On both occasions 30 homes across London were selected and bespoke one person shows were made for those hosts.  The work was captured and can be seen at Stratfordeast.tv.  TRSE also supported the HOME THEATRE (Birmingham) festival lead by The Birmingham Rep and in 2015 worked with The State Theatre Pretoria to deliver the first HOMETHEATRE in Africa, as well as an international symposium in 2015 in partnership with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
