CATHERINE LABIRAN
Catherine Labiran
Spoken word, London.
Catherine Labiran is a Spoken Word Artist that draws in her audience like a black hole and explodes passion like a Super Nova.
She uses her Hip Hop background to influence the rhythm in her truthful pieces that you will find yourself in.
She holds the title of SLAMbassador UK winner 2010 and she is an associate artist of The Roundhouse with her collective Elephant.
Catherine Labiran was selected to be one of the 12 poets for 2012 who created the National Lottery's Olympic Poem.
She was a buddy poet for Poetry Parnassus at the Southbank Centre where she was partnered with Wole Soyinka and TJ Dema.
She has performed in venues such as The Royal Festival Hall and The House of Commons and she aims to broaden her horizons to allow more people to access the truth behind her words and to find lost moments of their life embedded in her surreal and capivating wordplay.
Spoken Word Workshop
I’d like to run Spoken Word workshops for young people to be able to use their voices as tools for greater good.
In a society where teenagers face a lot of backlash in the media I think it is time to show that we are not all the same. We are talented and all talent deserves recognition.
These workshops will be a space of self-expression and invention. The idea is that all attendants feel free enough to explore their pasts and be courageous enough to take hold of their futures.
By the end we’d like a short film created that the teens can use as a tool of self-promotion. Such a film could also be shown in schools and youth groups to inspire others to express themselves.
The short film would be a collage of their personal story, the workshops and the final end of term show. I envision the show being a way for family and friends to witness the beauty of art that young people have within themselves.
The workshops, film and show will be a launch pad for greater opportunities.
