Theatre Royal Stratford East and Birkbeck
The new partnership will give people in east London the opportunity to develop their potential through access to education and contemporary theatre. Birkbeck Stratford and Theatre Royal share an ethos that dates back to our respective pioneers, George Birkbeck and Joan Littlewood, in bringing opportunities in education and the arts to the local community.
Although this partnership is new, Birkbeck has a long-standing association with Theatre Royal. Past and present trainee directors studying on the MFA Theatre Directing have benefited from secondments to the theatre, directing their own productions and adaptations. A student currently on attachment, Mathilde Lopez, leads the Birkbeck-sponsored post-show talkback season.
The new MA in Creative Producing is one of a number of collaborations between Birkbeck and Theatre Royal. It aims to prepare students for professional roles as producers in a wide variety of theatre and live performance events, enabling them to develop the personal judgement, practical skills, team-working, and problem-solving that such producers need. Firmly rooted in current industrial realities, the MA is practice-centred and practice-based. It will be based at Birkbeck’s Stratford campus and work in close association with Theatre Royal.
